The role of the human in “autonomous” systems

Recently we engaged in a very animated discussion with a major system developer working on Autonomous Combat Vehicles. (Lots of different acronyms here: UAV-unmanned air vehicle; USV-unmanned submersible vehicle, etc. but the themes are the same -"eliminate the human error and risk to humans by automating.") When I opened the meeting with "your vehicles aren't autonomous at all" you can imagine the reaction. Their point: there was no human aboard, therefore it's autonomous.
