  Recently I heard a radio interview of an author of a new book on American History.  The gist of his book is the striking difference between the actual facts of European settlement of North America and what people *believe* that history to be.  One of his examples was why Plymouth Rock is widely held to be 'the birthplace of the nation in 1620' when this plainly conflicts with the also widely held belief captured in the little grade school ditty about Columbus and 1492.  Obviously, both cannot be 'the first discovery', yet people are not troubled by their internal knowledge ...
