Visual Analytics “the new science”…is it really “new”?

Recently, lots of buzz has erupted around "Visual Analytics". It has resulting in the ordaining of PNNL as the National Visual Analytics Center (NVAC) with satellite Regional Centers (RVACs) around the world.
In a recent article, Visual Analytics has been described by Thomas as:
"Visual analytics is the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces." It is traditional scientific visualization, taken to the next level. In "Challenges in Visual Data Analysis" (2006), Keim and his co-authors note that visual analytics combines visualization with human factors, information, geospatial, and scientific analytics.
